STINGRAY DJAZZ PRESENTS: BEST PREMIÈRES OF 2024
FRIDAYS IN JANUARY AT 21:00
While 2024 marked the passing of legendary jazz figures such as singers Marlena Shaw and Jewel Brown, saxophonists Benny Golson and Lou Donaldson, and arranger/producer Quincy Jones, many young and promising artists were busy making their own mark on the genre. This January, Stingray DJAZZ revisits the channel’s best premières of 2024, celebrating the most popular recent additions to its catalogue. On Friday, January 3, Stingray DJAZZ presents New Mexican singer, guitarist, and songwriter Raul Midón in performance at Singapore’s Sing Jazz 2017. With a vocal range as dynamic as his guitar playing and a remarkable talent for trumpet mimicry, Midón’s performance transcends musical boundaries, effortlessly blending rock, jazz, folk, and Latin pop into his unique sound. On Friday, January 10, Stingray DJAZZ broadcasts “Identities. The Recording.” This film captures the making of Kārlis Vanags’s album "Identities" with the Latvian Radio Big Band, featuring all tracks and behind-the-scenes footage. The album, which won a Latvian Music Award, offers lively, contemporary swing music rooted in the big band tradition. On Friday, January 17, Stingray DJAZZ features Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah in Sofia, Bulgaria 2019. The boundary-pushing jazz trumpeter formerly known as Christian Scott performed his eclectic “stretch music” at the International A to JazZ Festival, seeking to embrace as many cultural and musical forms as possible within the traditional rhythms and harmonies of jazz. On Friday, January 31, Berlin-based jazz and cabaret singer Atrin Madani presents his debut album at a festive release concert at A-Trane Berlin in March 2023. Born in 1998 as the son of Iranian immigrants, Madani, in the face of pandemic uncertainty, geopolitical upheaval, and social unrest in his ancestral home country, asked himself: where are we now? His response to this question is as clear and precise as his singing: what we need most right now is honesty, humility, and quality, which are abundantly present on the young vocalist’s debut album. Toast to the future of jazz with Stingray DJAZZ, Friday nights throughout January at 21:00!
